Michael S. Owen – Writer/Director
Washington DC

Synopsis
Award winning “After Ike” retraces Lt. Col. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s pivotal 3,251-mile journey from Washington to San Francisco along the Lincoln Highway in 1919. This experience shaped his vision for U.S. highways that profoundly impacted small-town America and communities of color. The 60-minute film delves into the convoy’s challenges and transformative effects.

Iowa Connection
The Iowa connection for the entry “After Ike: A Journey That Changed America” lies in the historical significance of the Lincoln Highway, which runs through Iowa and played a crucial role in the 1919 convoy’s journey from Washington, DC, to San Francisco.  This route through Iowa provided both challenges and triumphs that were integral to the overall success of the convoy.  The documentary highlights how this journey, which included a young Dwight D. Eisenhower, not only captured the imagination of those in Iowa but also contributed to the eventual development of the interstate highway system.  This connection to Iowa is vital, as it underscores the state’s role in a pivotal event that shaped America’s future making the entry eligible for the Iowa Connection Award.

After many years of silence, these veterans are now beginning to share their stories and experiences. Hear what they have to say about living in Iowa, leaving, being elsewhere, and coming home. A personal tour of that era. Filmed over two years, this short film is a precursor to the full length feature premiering on Vietnam Veterans Day, March 29, 2025.

Synopsis
What unites us is more important than what divides us. “Moved by Waters” depicts collaborative water quality projects involving organizations and diverse groups of students, teachers, artists, farmers, and volunteers of all ages. Setting aside political or other differences, all are working toward improving the quality of water in the Upper Mississippi Watershed. Did you know a piece of trash discarded in your neighborhood can end up in the Gulf of Mexico? How is water quality monitored and evaluated? Is water pollution an urban or rural challenge? How does water quality affect wildlife and their habitat? We all need water that is clean and safe to drink, and the individuals, groups, and projects in “Moved by Waters” model a way forward that benefits people and the environment.

Iowa Connection
Eight five percent of MOVED BY WATERS was shot in Iowa watershed locations (Davenport, Bettendorf, Eldridge, Dixon, Walcott), and Iowa environmental organizations (such as Partners of Scott County Watersheds), individuals, volunteers, farmers, artists, students and teachers were interviewed for the project. Producer Tammy Rundle was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa.

Set in 1903, My Heart Remembers tells the story of Isabelle Standler, a young woman whose life is upended when her adoptive brother reveals she is not biologically part of the Standler family. Cast out and stripped of her inheritance, Isabelle faces rejection from her fiancé and the social standing she once knew. Relocating to the small town of Shay’s Ford, she struggles to rebuild her life while grappling with her identity. Through her work at the Rowleys’ market and encounters with the struggling street children, Isabelle finds a new purpose: to fight for child labor reform and build a brighter future for the orphans. Along the way, Isabelle learns to embrace her faith, rediscover her resilience, and redefine the meaning of family. Her journey becomes one of healing and hope, as she seeks justice for the vulnerable while confronting her own insecurities.

Synopsis
Amidst the often-overlooked spaces of the Midwest, lives a Black voice that demands to be heard. This documentary is a journey into the world of Caleb Rainey, a Black spoken word poet professionally known as The Negro Artist. Rainey’s poetry is a profound exploration of race, identity, and the lived realities of systemic inequality. His stage name is inspired by the Langston Hughes essay “The Negro artist and the Racial Mountain.” Hughes was an early influence for Rainey as he came into his own as an artist.  Our film seeks to capture the essence of Rainey not just as an artist, but as a vital voice in the ongoing dialogue about race in America. His work challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths and inspires us to envision a more equitable future. By sharing Rainey’s story, we hope to provide a window into the transformative potential of poetry and to affirm the significance of every voice in the ongoing quest for justice and understanding.

Iowa Connection
The production company and filmmaker are based in Iowa. Caleb Rainey, the subject of the film, started his artistry in Iowa City. The film is shot in locations throughout Iowa. The film features Iowa journalists and artists.

Synopsis
In a world where division around abortion fuels our headlines, hundreds of thousands of foster children remain in our system without families to care for them long term. More people fight for the rights of unborn children rather than those of children who are currently alive and alone in this country, desperately in need of a stable home. Additionally, funding to support these kids continues to dry up. In this case, the home, Stronghold, has been forced to close due to a lack of funding. And Fran, who has worked tirelessly for decades at this home, must move on. Fran believes she has found placement for all of the boys until Leo’s mother, Shelly, who has regained custody, fails to show up on the home’s final day. Now Fran must try to track down Shelly before she is able to embark on the next chapter of her own life — trying to reconcile with her grown daughter. When she finally finds Shelly, these women must make decisions that will change each of their lives forever — and that of Leo’s.

Synopsis
Our new short film TINA is a heartfelt story about two people who knew each other back when and are surprised to meet up again. We think viewers will absolutely relate, especially if they’ve ever encountered someone from their past who influenced them at a key juncture in their life, or if they’ve gone searching online for an old friend, teacher, boss, whoever…and been surprised by how much they’ve both changed! The story of TINA is especially relevant right now because it features a character who gives a positive voice to the transgender experience that we seldom see in films today. We believe this kind and thoughtful story will raise important conversations about trans rights and touch the hearts of those of us who believe that everyone has the right to live their most authentic and truthful life.
